Mississippi Republican House Chairman Micheal Guest, along with the Pennsylvanian Democratic Representative Susan Wild, announced on June 22nd that the house committee will be investigating further into the allegations surrounding New York Republican Representative George Santos. This investigation comes amidst allegations tying Santos of insurance benefit fraud.
The House Committee has expanded this search after a 13-count federal indictment was brought against Santos back on May 9th, 2023, for:
- Seven counts of wire fraud
- Three counts of money laundering
- One count of theft of public funds
- Two counts of making false statements to the House of Representatives.
The 13-count federal indictment comes after accusations surfaced that Santos scammed $3,000 from a GoFundMe campaign for a disabled veteran’s dying service dog, also admitting he embellished his resume, which stated where he attended college, his professional background going back to his “Jewish” heritage.
During Santos’s first run for Congress in June of 2020, Santos, Used the name George Devolder to open an office for Harbor City capital, a company accused of running a $17 Million Ponzi scheme. With being the subject of Federal, State, local, and International investigations, demands have come down, even from within his party. Santos stated he has no intentions of stepping down as he has broken no laws while he and Brazil have started into a plea agreement for unresolved charges of check fraud.
Santos and his family have posted his $500,000 bond, and is scheduled for court June 30th. Santos could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
